Mathematics meets practice

On 29 September, professionals from industry and academia will come together in Den Bosch for Recent Advances in Industrial and Applied Mathematics. CQM is co-organising this event on recent developments, applications and open challenges in industrial and applied mathematics.
The event also serves as a lead-up to ICIAM 2027, the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, which will be held in the Netherlands for the first time in July 2027.
From mathematical advances to practical applications
How can new developments in mathematics contribute to solving real-world problems? And which challenges from industry call for new mathematical solutions?
This interaction is at the heart of the symposium. The programme includes keynote lectures by Svetlana Dubinkina (VU Amsterdam) and Peter Grünwald (CWI & Leiden University), as well as four joint presentations in which academic and industry partners explore a topic together. There will also be plenty of opportunity for discussion, networking and exchanging experiences. CQM will also take part in the panel discussion.
Philips and CQM: making smarter decisions about R&D testing
One of the joint presentations will be given by Philips and CQM. Martijn Klein Horsman (Philips) and Jan Willem Bikker (CQM) will jointly present Stacking Evidence across tests in R&D.
In R&D, prototypes are often initially evaluated using relatively inexpensive tests to identify the most promising ideas. As development progresses, tests become more specific, but also more costly. The question is how much the results of those early tests can tell us about the outcomes of later tests.
Philips and CQM developed a method for systematically combining the results of different types of tests. Rather than considering the results of individual tests separately and interpreting them manually, the method combines this information to better predict the outcome of a more expensive test later in the development process.
This provides greater insight at an earlier stage of development, enabling better-informed decisions about, for example, whether to continue or stop a development programme. The approach can also help reduce the amount of testing required and, consequently, the costs associated with more expensive tests.
Towards ICIAM 2027
The symposium serves as a lead-up to ICIAM 2027, the 11th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics. From 12 to 16 July 2027, the international industrial and applied mathematics community will come together in The Hague. Under the theme Mathematics for a Sustainable Future, the congress will focus on new scientific developments as well as applications in science, engineering and industry.
