Translating specifications for the final product into specifications for the underlying modules, and subsequently into specifications for components, parts and processes, is a standard design activity. Nevertheless, many product designs result in an imbalance of specifications. For example, individual modules may meet their specifications while the system composed of those modules fails to meet its overall specifications. Common design approaches can therefore result in under- or over-specified designs.

The CQM Tolerance Design approach results in balanced tolerances throughout the entire chain, from the final product down to components and processes. In the Tolerance Design workshop, participants learn this approach and apply it to real-world cases as well as cases from their own organization. The CQM Tolerance Designer software plays a central role throughout the workshop.
