It has been our starting point since 1979. The vision of founder Jos de Kroon is more relevant than ever in today’s data-driven world.
In 1979, Philips needed a department that could solve control and improvement problems using quantitative methods. Today, we see the same strategic challenge in companies struggling with model based decision-making, AI, supply chain optimization or predictive modelling. The tools have changed, but the challenge remains: how do you ensure that technology serves the real business problem?
CQM’s foundation: expertise before hype
“We don’t start with clever maths, we start with the client’s problem.”
This quote from founder Jos de Kroon, published in the Philips Koerier in 1989, is still as relevant today. The mindset behind it forms the core of how CQM works: content before trends, collaboration before sales, and applicable mathematics before abstract models.
Today we call it AI, data science or digital twin; techniques we consciously apply as a means, not as an end. The core remains: first understand the problem, then start modelling.
From knowledge centre to strategic partner
After a strong start within Philips, the Centre for Quantitative Methods evolved into an indispensable sparring partner. In 1993, the spin-off followed: centre for became consultants in, and CQM B.V. continued independently, with Jos de Kroon as managing director.
Since then, we have become a strategic partner for organizations that want to improve their processes using data, models and analytical insight. From product development to transport, from manufacturing to retail—we make complex decisions simpler and better substantiated, with measurable impact.
What changed and what we deliberately kept the same
Technology has evolved. Calculations are faster, models are more powerful, and AI adds new layers of intelligence. But our approach has remained strikingly consistent:
- in close collaboration with the client
- based on deep domain expertise
- using a structured methodology
- and always focused on the real problem
Our consultants combine mathematics, statistics, data analysis and project management with over 45 years of experience in supply chain optimization and data-driven innovation. This allows us to realize practically applicable solutions that directly support better decision-making in operations.
Technically strong, according to our clients
Our most recent client satisfaction survey (2025) shows that our approach continues to be highly appreciated. Clients rate us 9.1 for reliability and 8.8 as a sparring partner. They see our strength in deep knowledge, pragmatic solutions and results oriented collaboration.
At the same time, we see clear opportunities for growth. Clients increasingly ask for strong project management and for the right expert in the right context. And that is precisely what CQM always aims for: continuous improvement in close cooperation with the client.
Looking back to keep moving forward
Since 1979, CQM has shown that sustainable impact arises from clear thinking, curiosity and an uncompromising focus on relevance. Whether it’s 1979, 1993 or 2025: the client - not the hype - is always our starting point.
“We don’t deliver models, we deliver solutions that matter.”
