On Thursday 20 March, CQM delivered an inspiring session during Data Day at RET—the public transport operator for the Rotterdam region. These events, held five times a year, help employees deepen their understanding of data-driven working. CQM was invited to host a morning session on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, blending theory with hands-on experience. Curious how we approached it? Read on!
From AI theory to practical application
The morning began with a keynote by Peter, titled “The success formulas of Artificial Intelligence: how mathematics is changing the world.” He explored the explosive growth of AI and the forces driving its development. While Generative AI models like ChatGPT receive a lot of attention, CQM focuses on Traditional AI—tailored AI solutions designed to solve concrete, real-world problems.
Through practical examples—including cases from the railway sector—Peter demonstrated how data analysis, Machine Learning and optimization algorithms contribute to effective and sustainable solutions. Participants gained insight into how AI and mathematics are truly transforming the world—and how these techniques can be applied within RET.
Machine Learning Game: learning by doing
Following the keynote, Lieneke and Eline guided the group through the Machine Learning Game—an interactive session designed for anyone interested in exploring Machine Learning, regardless of their background. In a low-threshold and engaging way, participants learned what a Machine Learning algorithm does and where it can be applied.
By working hands-on with clustering, (un)supervised learning, decision trees and confusion matrices, participants developed a tangible understanding of how these techniques work. The theory became immediately applicable—and directly relevant to their own work.
Discussion and insights for the future
The morning concluded with an open discussion, where participants exchanged ideas on how Data Science and AI could be applied within RET. This led to valuable conversations about the opportunities and challenges of data-driven work across the organization.

The session was received with great enthusiasm. According to our client, the morning aligned well with RET’s ambitions. The combination of theory, practice and open dialogue provided participants with both inspiration and concrete takeaways.
